Talking about Tenacity
Howdy! You won’t have heard from me for a while, I’ve been off having my twin bubbas so life has been pretty full-on and, to be honest, I was craving a social media holiday. Anyways, I couldn’t keep quiet for long and have lots of new musings to share.
So, I’ve been reading (well actually listening, love an audiobook) a fab book called ‘You Are a Badass’ by Jen Sincero which is all about pushing your comfort zone, perspective and tenacity.
TENACITY – now that’s not a word I hear very often but its one that immediately jumped out at me as significant. Here’s what it means (thanks to ye-old dictionary):
the quality or fact of being very determined; determination.
Simple, right? Easy to stay on track and keep focused on your goal without distraction, isn’t it? Well maybe it is when the going is good, things are running smoothly and your full of confidence, but what about when the going gets tough? Cue excuses!
“I don’t have time”
“I’ll just quickly see how many likes my latest post got on Insta”
“Maybe it’s pointless? I’ll probably fail anyway”
This is something we are all good at. If there were a prize for the amount of excuses we could come up with in a day, I’m pretty sure we would all stand a good chance of winning. The biggest problem with excuses is that we are often totally unaware we are making them – excuses often creep in cleverly disguised as habits.
Do you find yourself scrolling on Facebook only to be presented with things you have already seen? Oh, that’s because you checked it just five minutes ago! HABIT
Do you refresh your emails midway through completing the first page of your new website only to see you have no more new messages? Oh, that’s because you cleared them all already! HABIT
Do you stand in front of the fridge wondering if you are really hungry? Oh that’s because you ate lunch already! HABIT
Without sheer TENACITY and a dollop of awareness we automatically rely on habits to distract us when things seem challenging or overwhelming. That seed of self-doubt begins to be nurtured and we find anyway to delay the one thing that might actually catapult us to the next level. For me, TENACITY is the grit, determination and badass resilience it takes to break these habits. To notice when these old, unhelpful, self-sabotaging habits begin to surface and to consciously decide to override them. This will be the difference between you growing in areas of your life that feel stagnant or staying stuck wondering why life never seems to get past a certain point.
The harder things get, the more you are tested, the more you need to dig deep, stay focused and trust that the life you are looking for is just around the next ‘challenging’ bend.
